ANCESTRY    OF    ISAAC    HORTON 

I  Generation 

Barxabas  Horton,  of  Southold,  L.  I.,  was  born 
in  1600,  at  Mowsley,  Leicestershire,  England, 
and  died  July  13,  1680,  at  Southold,  Long 
Island,  His  wife,  Mary,  survived  him.  He 
emigrated  to  America  prior  to  1640,  and 
settled  at  Hampton,  New  Hampshire.  As 
early  as  1651  he  removed  to  Southold,  and 
resided  there  until  his  death.  He  held 
many  public  offices  and  was  one  of  the  prom- 
inent men  of  Southold.  He  was  deputy  to 
the  General  Court  of  the  New  Haven  Col- 
ony in  1654,  1656,  1658,  1659  and  1661.  In 
1663  and  1664  he  was  a  commissioner  for 
Southold. 

II  Generation 

Lieut.  Joseph  Hortox,  of  Rye,  N.  Y.,  eldest  son 
of  Barnabas  Horton,  was  born  about  1625 
in  England,  and  died  before  June  12,  1696. 
He  married  Jane  Budd,  daughter  of  Lieut. 
Jolui  Budd.  Joseph  Horton  owned  prop- 
erty in  Southold  in  1653.  In  1665,  he  re- 
moved from  Southold  to  Rye,  Westchester 
Co.,    N.    Y.,    at    that    time    included    in    the

Connecticut  Colony.  In  1667  he  was  ap- 
pointed lieutenant.  He  was  deputy  from 
Rye  to  the  Connecticut  General  Court  in 
1672,  and  was  one  of  the  commissioners  to 
determine  the  Jboundary  between  New  York 
and  Connecticut  in  1674.  He  was  commis- 
sioner for   Rye   from  1680  to  1683. 

IH  Generation  * 

Capt.  John  HoKToisr,  of  Rye,  N.  Y.,  son  oi 
Lieut.  Joseph  Horton,  was  born  about  1655, 
and  died  between  May  20  and  Aug.  4,  1717. 
He  married  prior  to  Aug.  29,  1684,  Rachel 
Hoit,  daughter  of  John  Hoit,  of  Rye.  John 
Horton  was  appointed  lieutenant  for  the 
town  of  Rye  in  1697,  and  was  later  made 
captaiui.  In  1699  he  was  deputy  to  the 
Connecticut  General  Court. 


IV  Generation 

Daniel  Hortox  of  Cortlandt  Manor,  N.  Y.,  son 
of  Capt.  John  Horton,  was  born  April  23, 
1692,  and  died  Dec.  10,  1777.  He  married 
Esther  Lane,  who  was  born  May  24,  1704, 
and  died  April  18,  1769.  He  removed  from 
Rye  to  Cortlandt  Manor  about  1739  and  re- 
sided there  until  his  death.  He  held  no 
public    offices.

V  Generation 

Judge  William  Hortok,  of  Colchester,  N.  Y., 
son  of  Daniel  Horton,  was  born  Jan.  10, 
1743  and  died  April  4,  1831,  at  Colchester, 
N.  Y.  He  married  Elizabeth  Covert,  daugh- 
ter of  Elisha  Covert,  of  Cortlandt  Manor, 
N.  Y.  She  vi'as  born  Jan.  4,  1743,  and  died 
June  24,  1831.  About  1793  William  Horton 
left  Cortlandt  Manor  and  settled  at  Col- 
chester, Delaware  Co.,  N.  Y.  In  1794  he  watj 
elected  commissioner  of  liighways.  During 
the  years  1797-1801  he  was  one  of  the  judges 
of  the  Court  of  Common  Pleas  of  Delaware 
Co.  In  1798  he  represented  the  county  in 
the  Legislature  of  the  State. 

VI  Generation 

Isaac  Horton,  of  Liberty,  N.  Y.,  son  of  Wil- 
liam and  Elizabeth  (Covert)  Horton,  was 
born  April  13,  1780,  at  Somers,  N.  Y.,  and 
died  May  10,  1855,  at  Liberty,  N.  Y.  He 
married  Jan.  1,  1807,  Prudence  Knapp, 
daughter  of  Enoch  and  Esther  (Wright) 
Knapp.  Prudence  (Knapp)  Horton  was 
born  June  20,  1787,  at  Yorktown,  N.  Y.,  and 
died  Aug.  31,  1880,  at  Middletown,  N.  Y. 
Isaac  Horton  held  various  town  offices  in 
Colchester  fro-m  1804  to  1823.  In  1826  he 
removed  from  there  to  Liberty,  N.  Y.,  where 
he  spent  the   rest  of  his   life.
